Jonathan Armour, an Irish artist based in London, was drawn to the residency at Studio 88 because it explores aspects of identity, particularly gender, which is a core aspect of his practice. Coming to Thailand, where gender has a different cultural context, provides an opportunity to view these concepts from a new perspective.

At first, I thought I would draw a diagram to show all the different facets to this residency experience, and in trying to communicate how important they were in different ways. The truth is, after thinking about it more, it is clear to me that they comprise one whole very important experience, and so, given so many different aspects to the creative process, I decided to keep them bundled together, as a whole. We are excited to announce the Studio 88 x NY20+ Residency for Thai Artists and invite applications for the 2025 program. The residency will take place in Chengdu, China, from July 1 to July 30, 2025. Submission by 15 April 2025.

During his time at the residency, he immersed himself in the local culture, capturing raw video footage and creating a series of black-and-white faux-film stills. The residency provided an ideal setting for reflection and creative development, inspiring ideas for a new performance project. Geczy, an accomplished artist and writer, found Studio 88 to be a space for deep artistic engagement, free from distractions. His experience highlights the residency’s commitment to fostering meaningful creative exploration.

We’re excited to welcome Pornpilin Tancharoen, Art Therapist and Abstract Painter, to Studio 88. Pornpilin, aka Zign, is dedicated her art practice to disability advocacy. She has collaborated with blind and non-blind artists to explore sensory-based art, including developing scent-labeled paint to enhance artistic expression. Through her workshops, she fosters self-healing and empowerment by integrating multi-sensory experiences into the creative process.

Studio 88 Artist Residency welcomes Dr Matt Yoxall, a theatre-maker, storyteller, leadership coach, and published academic with a diverse background in storytelling and community engagement. Trained in theatre in London in the mid-1990s, Matt has worked extensively as a professional storyteller, particularly in museum and art gallery education, as well as community cultural development.

We’re excited to welcome Jasmine Baksh, a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist, to Studio 88. Based in Clifton, New Jersey, Jasmine’s work is deeply autobiographical, shaped by personal experiences and memories that explore themes of domestic violence, hidden emotions, and instability. Through her confessional art, she transforms difficult life experiences into powerful visual narratives, using sculpture as a language to communicate what words often cannot.

Known for her bold, surrealist paintings, Abi’s work explores the intersections of identity, culture, and the lasting impact of colonial histories. Her art challenges dominant narratives, using vivid imagery to confront themes of postcolonialism, education, and the complexities of personal and collective memory.
