At Studio 88, we believe a residency continues beyond the studio. It lives on through the ideas, relationships, encounters, and conversations that emerge from the experience. We see exhibitions not simply as presentations of finished work, but as spaces for encounter—where artistic practices can be experienced, questioned, exchanged, and connected with wider communities.
Why We Exhibit
Making Practice Visible:
Artists need spaces not only to make, but also to share. Exhibitions bring artistic ideas into the public realm, creating opportunities to meet audiences, receive responses, and contribute to wider cultural conversations.
Creating Encounters:
Exhibitions bring together people who might otherwise never meet—international and local artists, different disciplines and generations, artists and audiences. We believe meaningful creative exchange begins with these encounters.
Connecting Global & Local:
We create a two-way exchange between local knowledge and global perspectives. International artists are encouraged to engage with their surroundings, while local artists and collectives connect with new practices, perspectives, and networks. Neither is a backdrop to the other; both can influence and transform the encounter.
Supporting Experimentation:
Not every exhibition needs to present a finished product. We welcome research, work-in-progress, performance, installation, experimentation, and collaborative formats. We are interested not only in what artists make, but what becomes possible when they are given space to experiment.

Our programme reflects the diverse creative ecology of Chiang Mai and beyond.
Artists-in-Residence — providing opportunities to share work developed during or beyond their residency, connect with new audiences, and continue conversations initiated during their stay.
Local Artists & Collectives — creating platforms for Chiang Mai and Thailand-based practitioners to connect with visiting artists, new audiences, and international perspectives.
Creative & Cross-Disciplinary Practitioners — welcoming practices that move across art, design, craft, culture, ecology, education, research, technology, performance, and community engagement.
Our Curatorial Approach
Our curatorial practice is guided by curiosity, context, dialogue, and experimentation.
We value process alongside outcome, creating room for research, discovery, transformation, and even failure. We encourage artists to respond to their surroundings, engage with other practitioners, and create meaningful connections with audiences.
We also value diversity of voices—not simply as representation, but as an opportunity for different ways of thinking, making, and experiencing the world to genuinely meet.
