Ben Robinson was born in Dillsboro, a rural town in southern Indiana (USA). He studied photography at Indiana University and received my BFA, along with a minor in Art History, in 2016. He currently lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand. He has had exhibitions in the United States and abroad. He previously joined Studio 88 as an artist-in-residence and has since returned for several exhibitions. In May 2026, he returns once again to present a new body of work, alongside leading a photography and darkroom workshop.
As a photographer, Ben’s practice centers on analogue photography, darkroom processes, and immersive installation. Working primarily with film and hand-crafted techniques such as cyanotype, his approach emphasizes slowness, tactility, and experimentation, often extending photographic images into spatial and material forms.

Ben’s artwork deals with a wide variety of concepts, inspired by personal experiences and art history. The majority of his work explores sexual or erotic themes on an intimate and societal level. He strives to raise important social and cultural questions. He enjoys combining photography and other mediums. His work also often pushes the boundaries of art and photography, using traditional methods in non-traditional ways.
His work explores themes of sexuality and eroticism through both intimate and societal lenses, examining vulnerability, desire, and the human body as sites of connection and tension. Through the interplay of image, process, and installation, Ben creates contemplative environments that invite viewers to reflect on personal narratives alongside broader cultural perceptions. Rooted in a deep engagement with process and place, his practice bridges traditional darkroom methods with contemporary artistic inquiry.

The Quit Piece
In the span of three months the artist graduated from college, got married, moved to Thailand, started my first full-time job and rejected Christianity. This piece is a reflection of all the new elements in his life. It is my attempt at juggling all the different parts while still doing what he loves: working in the darkroom. Photograms of collared work shirts, Thai silks, worn down socks, his wife’s lingerie and more come together to create a mural of transition. The Quilt Piece, is an installation of a combination of cyanotypes and silver gelatin photograms of clothing, sewn together with book binding thread to create a biomorphic shape.

Ben Robinson was an artist-in-residence in 2023 and returned again in 2025. In May 2026, he returns to lead a photography and darkroom workshop, inviting participants to engage with analogue practice in an immersive and hands-on way. Participants are welcome to photograph the surroundings of Doi Saket using a film camera or bring exposed rolls from home to develop during the workshop.
This workshop series offers a gentle and engaging introduction to black-and-white film photography. Across three hands-on sessions, participants will learn the full analogue process—from developing film to negatives and to creating their own prints.
