Franklin Lau

Franklin Lau is a visual artist and percussionist with over three decades of experience in photography, spanning lifestyle, fashion, and fine art. His artistic journey also embraces music, moving from drumming and djembe to the meditative power of gongs and sound healing. Now based in Chiang Mai, he continues to explore the intersection of image, sound, and culture. Franklin has been a great support to Studio 88 and he enjoys collaborate with our local and international artists.

Franklin Lau, a distinguished figure in the commercial photography industry, dedicated 35 years to excellence in commercial media, predominantly in Hong Kong. Since 2016, he has been making significant strides in the Canadian market, bringing his expertise and refined artistry to a new audience. His illustrious career focusing on Lifestyle, Fashion, and Celebrity content, where he is celebrated for his ability to capture ‘the moment’ with a single frame. His mastery of lighting and visual manipulation allows him to create striking and unique imagery, transforming scenes with a distinctive touch.

In addition to his commercial work, Franklin dedicates time to fine art photography. Over the past eight years, he has showcased his work in four major exhibitions in Canada, including the prestigious Contact Film Festival. His passion for art seamlessly blends with his professional skills, enriching both his fine art and commercial endeavors.

Franklin’s film career, represented by Bleu Arc Pictures since 2006, has transitioned from Hong Kong to the realm of documentary filmmaking in Canada. His latest project, “ Flowers and Fruits, ” premiered in July 2019 in Kelowna, B.C. explores the history of early Chinese immigrants in the Okanagan Region based on a mural by Charles Chau. This film has been recognized with awards, including being named one of the “10 Best Films” of 2020 at the “China Roots” annual festival and a semifinalist at the AEI Film Festival in Cyprus.

Franklin’s musical journey spans from drumming in metal bands and playing African djembe with electronic musicians to discovering the gong in Canada, where he shifted from raw rhythms to a more spiritual, meditative practice. Now based in Chiang Mai, he continues to expand his artistry, exploring the Thai gong and its traditional techniques as part of a deeper journey into sound, culture, and healing.
