Studio 88 Artist Residency Brings International Collaboration to Base Box Theatre

Studio 88 Artist Residency is thrilled to be an organising partner of the Base Box Theatre, an initiative that champions the performing arts in Chiang Mai Province. This collaboration is a significant step in enriching the Thai art scene by introducing international perspectives and fostering creative exchanges.

The Base Box Theatre, a pilot project supported by the Creative Economy Promotion Agency (CEA), aims to cultivate a vibrant theater culture in Chiang Mai. By bringing together local theater groups and international artists, it creates a platform for knowledge exchange, skill development, and innovative performances. This year’s program features an array of events, including performances and workshops that blend Thai and global artistic traditions.

Working closely with Chaiwat Lochotinant,a visionary Artistic Director, Studio 88 has played a crucial role in bringing international talent to the festival. Notably, Jonathan Armour, an international guest artist, formally selected under the Gender Fluid Evolving Identities, and returning resident for the Design Lab Performing Arts at Studio 88, will present two events that merge technology and performance art. His “Re-Invocation Workshop,” co-developed with Thai artist ‘Golf’ Thanupon Yindee, explores the intersection of augmented reality (AR) and performance, challenging traditional norms of identity in our increasingly digital world. Additionally, “Incarnation,” an experimental performance in development with Golf, Sade and Sunvo, combines dance and projected imagery to tell a powerful story of personal transformation.

Through these collaborations, Studio 88 Artist Residency not only enhances the diversity and quality of the Base Box Theatre’s offerings but also contributes to the broader creative ecosystem in Thailand. This partnership highlights the importance of international collaboration in the arts, paving the way for future cross-cultural exchanges and innovative artistic practices in the region.
