Generative AI is rapidly changing how creative work is produced, distributed and understood. Its technologies, uses and consequences are still developing.
Studio 88 wants to state the principles that guide our position.
We are concerned by generative AI systems that use creative work without the knowledge, permission or meaningful participation of the people who made it.
Artists, writers and other creators should have control over how their work is used. Where creative work contributes to the training or development of commercial AI systems, there should be transparency, informed consent and appropriate compensation, including licensing, royalties or other forms of remuneration. Creators should also have practical ways to refuse permission.
Studio 88 opposes the infringement of intellectual property and the unauthorised appropriation of creative work. We are also concerned by uses of generative AI that imitate artists without consent, obscure authorship, or undermine the recognition and livelihood of human creators.
The environmental consequences of generative AI must also be taken seriously. Its use depends on significant energy, water, infrastructure and material resources, and should not be treated as environmentally neutral.
Studio 88 approaches generative AI critically and cautiously. Questions of consent, authorship, attribution, compensation and environmental responsibility are central to how these technologies should be understood and used.
As the technology continues to change, we will continue to review our own position and practices.
