It is our pleasure to welcome Samphasit Luangaphai (Dano) as an Artist-in-Residence at Studio 88. Dano is a Laos visual artist whose practice is deeply informed by Buddhism, nature, and spiritual reflection. His work emerges from long-term self-discovery, drawing connections between inner awareness, belief systems, and the natural world. Dano is a member of Lost Jigsaw.
Working across painting, installation, and mixed media, Dano explores themes of impermanence, balance, and the cycles of life. Symbolic forms such as the lotus, the circle, and elemental materials like stone, wood, and metal, frequently appear in his work, reflecting Buddhist philosophy and meditative thinking. Pieces such as Lotus Flowers and Philosophy in Buddhism and Universal Circle visualize spiritual concepts through layered imagery, ritual-like structures, and careful use of color and space.
Alongside his painting practice, Dano has developed installation works that respond to social and material realities. Projects such as The World of Materialism and The O invite viewers to reflect on attachment, consumption, and the relationship between human desire and spiritual emptiness. These works often encourage slow observation and embodied experience, allowing meaning to unfold through presence rather than explanation.
During his residency at Studio 88, Dano will continue developing new works that explore spirituality, nature, and contemporary life through painting and installation. His time at the studio offers space for research, experimentation, and reflection, allowing philosophical ideas to take physical form through material, gesture, and spatial arrangement.
Through his practice, Dano invites viewers to pause and reflect on their inner worlds, questioning how belief, nature, and material existence shape our understanding of life. His work creates quiet spaces for contemplation, balance, and awareness within an increasingly fast-moving world.
