Studio 88 Artist Residency is delighted to welcome Thomas Triebe-Pay, an abstract sculptor from Toronto, Ontario, as our artist-in-residence for July and August 2025. With a strong foundation in sculpture and arts management, Thomas brings a distinctive approach to material, form, and spatial engagement.
A graduate of the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Studio Art and a minor in Arts Management, Thomas has been building a dynamic practice rooted in sculpture—working extensively with metal, wood, concrete, and found materials. His work examines the tension between the familiar and the abstract, and often invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with everyday objects through large-scale, immersive constructions.
Professionally, Thomas has honed his sculptural and technical skills through assistant roles at leading studios such as Jen Aitken Studio and Kate Duncan Design. He has participated in prestigious residencies at Gibraltar Point (Toronto Islands) and L.A. Studio (Pennsylvania), and has exhibited widely across Canada in both gallery and alternative art spaces. Highlights include his public sculpture installation at the University of Guelph Library and group exhibitions at Gallery 1313 and Worth Gallery.
At Studio 88, Thomas will develop a new sculptural installation using reclaimed local materials, responding to the landscapes and textures of Chiang Mai. His project explores themes of environmental transformation and the sensory memory of place, aiming to create a dialogue between natural forms and industrial remnants. The work will culminate in an open studio presentation inviting the local community to engage with the piece and the ideas behind it.
