Rachel Chapman, an emerging artist from Melbourne, Australia, took this residency at Studio 88 as their first real chance to immerse themself fully in their artistic pursuits. Rachel reflected on their artistic development during their residency at Studio 88.
As a queer individual, Rachel has always felt a strong sense of belonging and safety in Thailand. When they learned about this residency, they were excited to connect with fellow artists who share an interest in gender fluidity, as well as to explore the unique experiences of gender within Thai culture.
Their work encompasses video, photography, drawing, painting, and collage. They have recently focused on video projects, collaborating with the people in their life to share their stories and highlight the connections between their experiences.
At the residency, they have taken a more introspective approach, creating deeply personal pieces about their own experience of gender. The support from Studio 88 has been invaluable, providing them with the necessary resources and fostering connections with local activists and artists. These collaborations have enriched their understanding of local gender experiences and enabled them to gather the diverse materials they need for their video project.
“It’s been amazing to be here, supported by Studio 88 to get the resources and connect with the people that I need to bring that to life.”
A major highlight was the visit to Nancy and Nachi, the first elected transgender representatives in their province. Their stories of election and community engagement exemplify leadership and courage, making a significant impact locally.
Through this residency, they have delved into crucial questions about gender and plan to continue these discussions at home while developing new creative works. They see great potential to expand their video project and explore other mediums to represent their complex experience of gender.
“Here at the residency, I’ve been much more introspective and making work that’s very personal about my own experience of gender.”
