Testimonial – Jonathan Armour

Jonathan Armour and Thai artists at the Base Box Theatre, Thailand Creative & Design Centre, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Jonathan Armour, an Irish artist based in London, was drawn to the residency at Studio 88 because it explores aspects of identity, particularly gender, which is a core aspect of his practice. Coming to Thailand, where gender has a different cultural context, provides an opportunity to view these concepts from a new perspective.

Jonathan reflected on his exploration and artistic development during his residency at Studio 88.

Jonathan departed from this residency, equipped with a wealth of video documentation from various workshops and creative exchanges. These recordings will serve as the basis for future development of his artistic ideas.

“I’ve been very lucky. I’m going away from this residency with a lot of videos of the different workshops and the things we developed in those, which will provide the basis for future development of the ideas.”

Looking ahead, he is eager to explore ways to enhance the staging of performances that involve both a physical person and a digital character. During the four-week residency, he has refined techniques and developed innovative concepts for live video editing. These enhancements are designed to significantly enrich the audience’s experience.

Jonathan’s creative work includes oil painting and digital art. He often creates two-dimensional prints on silk or makes videos as part of his digital output. He applied for this residency to explore performance within his art. While some of his previous pieces have included performance, he had not worked with professional performers before. At Studio 88 residency, he collaborated with Golf, an experienced choreographer and performer. They used workshop techniques to explore themes of obesity and gender, focusing on how people interact. This exploration has involved using augmented reality, which has been very exciting. The collaboration has been a transformative experience, leading to extraordinary outcomes.
