Humour Landscape: A Group Art Exhibition

Studio 88 Artist Residency has announced the launch of the Dream Catcher Soul Searching project with the exhibition Humour Landscape, part of the Upper Floor project by CEA and TCDC Chiang Mai. This exciting group art exhibition features works by Peter Berner (Australia), Koi Sakunee (Thailand), and Suteera Fankaew (Thailand), and is curated by Chaiwat Lochotinant and Sasiwimon Wongjarin. The exhibition will also include live performances by guest artists Jessie McCall and Presley Ziogas from New Zealand on the opening ceremony day.

Humour Landscape explores the myriad ways individuals express personal reactions to broader social issues that impact our daily lives.

Humour is a smile that masks the gritting of teeth and the repression of deep-seated emotions. In the context of the art world, particularly under the influence of those in power who shape national development, this exhibition explores the disconnect between the landscape of artistic creation and the often-unsupportive environment it exists within. Artists must frequently contend with systemic obstacles and seek additional means of livelihood just to pursue their passion. ‘Humour Landscape’ delves into this struggle, highlighting the resilience and determination required to thrive creatively amid challenges, while using humour as both a coping mechanism and a form of subtle rebellion.

The exhibition delves into how we navigate and respond to acceptance, frustration, happiness, joy, rebellion, sadness, and more, capturing these emotions through diverse artistic mediums. This dynamic showcase includes drawings, paintings, collages, and movement-based art, offering a unique lens into the world through the eyes of these talented artists.

Featured Artists
Peter Berner (Australia): A multi-talented artist, Peter Berner captivates audiences with his unique blend of humour and visual artistry. His work thrives on the agility and playfulness of the medium, allowing him to continuously innovate and evolve his artistic practice. With a rich background in both comedy and visual arts, Berner’s contributions to the cultural landscape are both profound and entertaining, always pushing the boundaries of inspiration and creation.

Koi Sakunee (Thailand)
Koi Sakunee, professionally trained in agricultural studies, balances various jobs to support her passion as a writer, illustrator, and visual artist. Her collection “Moonlit Emancipation” brings to life a series of drawings and paintings that depict the evolving landscape of a girl transforming
into a woman and eventually an elderly granny, capturing the phases of life and moments of joy and struggle. Rendered on handmade Weruwan paper by Master Paper Maker Suphan Phromsaen, Koi’s work is enriched with unique texture and depth.

Suteera Fankaew (Thailand)
Suteera Fankaew, a visual artist, martial art performer, and passionate barista, showcases his diverse talents through various roles as a technician, artist assistant, and trainer. His engaging dance performances combine slow, elegant movements with vibrant, high-energy sequences, creating stunning visual and emotional experiences. Suteera’s dynamic and expressive dance brings landscapes to life, captivating audiences with his unique artistic vision.

Guest Artists: Live Performance
Jessie McCall (New Zealand)
Jessie McCall is a queer female choreographer, mother, and performance practitioner. Her choreographic practice searches for unexpected and generative methods of reimagining human experience – and explores disruption as a source of renewal.

Presley Ziogas (New Zealand)
Presley Ziogas is a dance artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Presley’s practice is deeply influenced by her identity and experience as wāhine Māori, and particularly the collisions of traditional indigenous knowledge systems with modern globalised realities that she, and many other Māori, face in Aotearoa today.

Humour Landscape promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking exhibition, inviting visitors to explore and reflect on the intricate connections between personal expression and broader societal issues.
