In February and March 2024 Canadian artist and printmaker Johanna Griffith was an artist-in-residence at Studio 88. Here she told us a bit about her experience and what she got up to during the residency, where she explored the theme of pollution.
“Studio 88 artist residency was a place for me to meet a group of like-minded international artists working in different media around a common theme (Reviving Nature). Through Aom’s large network, we were also introduced to a number of Thai artists, researchers and activists who work on similar themes. Creating and exhibiting with such an engaged group of artists was the highlight of the residency for me.

Studio 88 is set in a beautiful garden, just a short walk from cafés, restaurants, and the local market. There is also a large outdoor swimming pool at the neighbouring Tao Gardens where I enjoyed a daily swim. Like everywhere I stayed in Thailand, I spent most days here outside which is wonderful.

There is a large hall for artists to work in, and a new darkroom facility. The staff were very helpful when it came to finding art supplies, even when I was looking for less traditional things like local dye plants.

My time at the residency was busy yet I came away feeling reinvigorated and inspired.“
Studio 88 is accepting applications on an on-going basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
