It is our pleasure to welcome Phonepaseth Keosomsak (Shine) as an Artist-in-Residence at Studio 88. Shine is a Laos interdisciplinary artist, architect, and heritage practitioner whose practice is rooted in cultural landscapes, lived experience, and close observation of the relationship between humans and nature. His work draws inspiration from rivers, forests, rituals, and everyday cultural practices, weaving these elements into research-based and
socially engaged artworks.

Shine’s practice often translates cultural memory, ecological awareness, and shared experience into visual and participatory forms. Through drawing, painting, installation, and social practice, he reflects on the interconnected relationships between people, place, and environment. Projects such as Luang Prabang: From Cultural Landscape into Practice and the Mekong Fish Project explore how living heritage, ecological systems, and community
knowledge shape identity and collective responsibility.

During his residency at Studio 88, Shine will continue developing works that explore cultural landscapes, environmental awareness, and regenerative art practices. Through a reflective and research-driven process, he will draw from local contexts, natural materials, and collaborative exchange to create works that respond to both cultural and ecological realities. His time at the studio offers space to deepen these explorations and to translate research into meaningful artistic practice.

Through his work, Shine invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between culture and nature, and on how art can foster responsibility, care, and shared understanding. His practice creates spaces for dialogue, connection, and rethinking how we live with one another and the environments we inhabit.
Studio 88 accepts applications on an ongoing basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
