It is our pleasure to welcome Willy Hansana as an Artist-in-Residence at Studio 88. Willy is a contemporary artist based in Vientiane, Laos, whose practice explores themes of identity, climate, culture, and humanity. Working across painting, installation, performance, sound, and mixed media, his work reflects a deep inquiry into how individuals and communities navigate a rapidly changing world. Willy Hansana is a member of Lost Jigsaw, an arts-initiatives based in Laos.

Willy’s artistic process is rooted in questioning and investigation. Rather than offering fixed narratives, his works create open spaces for reflection by inviting viewers to consider the relationship between humans, nature, memory, and social structures. Through material choices and spatial arrangements, his installations and performances often respond directly to environmental conditions and cultural contexts, balancing conceptual depth with sensory experience.

As a co-founder of the Lost Jigsaw collective, Willy actively collaborates with artists from diverse backgrounds to expand the contemporary art landscape in Laos. His practice has been presented in exhibitions, festivals, and collaborative projects across Laos and internationally, including Thailand and regional platforms that emphasize dialogue, exchange, and experimentation.

During his residency at Studio 88, Willy will continue developing interdisciplinary works that integrate installation, performance, and sound. Using the studio as a site for exploration and research, he will further examine themes of ecological awareness, identity, and collective memory, allowing ideas to evolve through process, collaboration, and lived experience.
Through his work, Willy invites audiences to slow down, observe, and question the systems that shape everyday life. His practice offers a space for contemplation, where art becomes a tool for awareness, connection, and transformation.
Studio 88 accepts applications on an ongoing basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
