Michiko Yoshino

It is our pleasure to welcome Michiko Yoshino, a Tokyo-based voice artist and educator whose practice centers on vocal improvisation, deep listening, and collaborative sound-making. Her work moves fluidly across performance, education, and sound installation, exploring the voice as a living,
expressive instrument beyond genre and form. Michiko will collaboratively conduct a circle singing workshop with our artist-in-residence.

Michiko’s artistic practice is shaped by long-term engagement with improvisation and embodied vocal expression. Alongside her improvisational work, she performs jazz and Brazilian music, influences that continue to inform her open and intuitive approach to sound. Through collaborations with dancers and multidisciplinary artists, she explores how voice interacts with movement, space, and presence.

In addition to her performance practice, Michiko is deeply committed to teaching and mentorship. Based in Tokyo, she performs regularly while running the Michiko Yoshino Workshop, where she supports singers of diverse backgrounds in developing their voices through exploration, listening, and creative freedom. Her approach emphasizes process over perfection, encouraging each voice to emerge authentically.

Michiko graduated from Berklee College of Music with a major in Performance and has studied extensively with voice artist Rhiannon since the early 2000s. Over the years, she has collaborated with international musicians through vocal improvisation concerts and workshops, contributing to a global dialogue around voice as an expressive and communal practice.

During the workshop with Joanne Lauterjung, musician and singer, artist-in-residence at Studio 88, Michiko will continually explore vocal improvisation and collaborative sound practices, engaging with space, listening, and shared creation. Her time at the studio offers a space for experimentation, exchange, and deepening the relationship between voice, body, and environment.

Studio 88 accepts applications on an ongoing basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
