Kongkiat Ruennoy

It is our pleasure to welcome Kongkiat Ruennoy (Geng) a Chiang Mai–based cellist and music composer whose practice centers on storytelling through sound. With a background in classical music and a deep curiosity for folk, pop, and world traditions, his work moves fluidly across genres while remaining grounded in emotional expression. Geng is invited as a Collaborative Artist at Studio 88.

Geng’s musical practice spans live performance and composition for film and television. His approach to the cello blends technical discipline with improvisation, allowing each piece to unfold with sensitivity and responsiveness. Through layered melodies and subtle textures, he creates soundscapes that support narrative, atmosphere, and feeling rather than spectacle.

During collaborative project with Joanne Lauterjung at Studio 88, Geng will continue exploring music as a narrative medium, developing compositions that respond to place, image, and collaboration. His time at the studio offers space to experiment with sound, improvisation, and cross-disciplinary exchange, allowing new musical ideas to emerge through listening and interaction.

Through his work, Geng invites audiences to experience music as a form of storytelling, one that connects emotion, memory, and imagination. His practice reflects a quiet openness, where sound becomes a bridge between disciplines and a shared space for creative dialogue.

Studio 88 accepts applications on an ongoing basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
