Joanne Lauterjung

It is our pleasure to welcome back Joanne Lauterjung. She is a peacebuilder, musician, and interdisciplinary artist whose work sits at the intersection of sound, creativity, and social connection. With over two decades of experience, Joanne has developed a practice that uses music and artistic collaboration as tools for emotional well-being, resilience, and dialogue across cultures. She is based in Chiang Mai, where she works with individuals and communities through creative, participatory approaches.

Joanne holds a Master’s degree in Conflict Transformation, a foundation that deeply informs her artistic practice. Her work bridges artistic expression with peacebuilding, exploring how sound, listening, and shared creative experiences can foster understanding and belonging. Alongside her artistic work, she has facilitated workshops, performances, and community-based projects internationally, often working in intercultural and interdisciplinary contexts.

At Studio 88, Joanne will develop Resonance – A Mother Tongue Project, an evolution of her earlier Mother Tongue Project. This new work explores the relationship between sound, space, and belonging through a series of site-specific, improvisational performances. Collaborating with Thai musicians and artists, Joanne will investigate how acoustic environments shape musical expression and how improvised sound and movement can create moments of shared understanding across cultural boundaries.

The project will unfold through research, site visits, rehearsals, and live performances in spaces chosen for their unique sonic qualities. While the performances will be structured conceptually, they will remain open and responsive—allowing each location, and the people within it, to influence the final form. Joanne will act as lead artist, guiding the conceptual framework and documentation, while working closely with collaborating musicians in a spirit of exchange and experimentation.

Through Resonance, Joanne continues her ongoing inquiry into how we connect with places that are not our birthplace, how sound can hold memory and meaning, and how art can open spaces for empathy, presence, and collective listening.

Studio 88 accepts applications on an ongoing basis. Check out our residency program and apply now.
