Studio 88 is delighted to welcome Anders McDonald as our Photographer in Residence this October 2025. With over three decades behind the lens — from film and darkroom beginnings to mastering today’s digital craft — Anders brings a rich blend of experience, curiosity, and storytelling to his practice. During his time in Chiang Mai, he will revisit the region after four decades, exploring its people, landscapes, and evolving culture through a fresh photographic lens.

Anders McDonald is an accomplished photographer with more than 35 years behind the lens. Beginning with film and a home darkroom, he has embraced the digital era and is now skilled in every facet of photography. Based in Warburton, just outside Melbourne, Anders has earned recognition from the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers and works across commercial, artistic, and community settings.
His career spans a wide range of projects: from documenting events and exhibitions for corporate and private clients, to capturing landscapes, portraits, and behind-the-scenes moments for theatre, film, and short productions. Anders also creates corporate publicity images for hospitality brands, real estate photography, and private commissions such as folio shoots, maternity portraits, weddings, and celebrations.

A strong advocate for social impact, Anders contributes pro bono work to organisations such as Oxfam Australia and Whitelion, and donates 15% of his sales to support Oxfam’s initiatives. His practice is informed by a deep sense of connection to people and place, whether at home in Australia or travelling across more than 50 countries.
Anders stated that “I have been fortunate to travel the world for most of my life, including my beloved Australia. With a camera in my hand, the world and its people have unfolded before me, revealing the connectedness of humanity and the diversity that enriches our understanding of what it means to be human.
This fascination with cultures, landscapes, and people continues to inspire me. I began with film and a home darkroom, and today I enjoy the endless creative opportunities of the digital era. Each year, I dedicate part of my time to charities, and a portion of my sales supports Oxfam’s important work.”

During his October 2025 residency at Studio 88 in Doi Saket, Anders will embark on a visual journey to reconnect with northern Thailand — a place he last visited 40 years ago. He intends to explore how the region has changed and what remains timeless, weaving together memories of the past with images of the present.
Anders’ practice combines street photography, studio work, landscape, and abstraction, reflecting his experiences and connections with people and culture. While in residence, he plans to engage with the local community: inviting residents to become part of his photographic narratives, offering informal coaching to emerging photographers, and sharing his knowledge through conversations and workshops.
