Koi Sakunee Nattapoolwat, a writer and illustrator based in Chiang Mai, was selected to join the Studio 88 x NY20+ residency. This opportunity allowed her to explore new places for inspiration and work in different environments, broadening her perspective and enabling her to create unique art while generating fresh ideas. Here Koi reflected how this residency in Chengdu impacted her artistic development.
During her time in Chengdu, she committed to writing a daily journal and creating an illustration each day. This series, dedicated to Chengdu, incorporated natural colors into her artwork. The residency provided incredible support, supplying her with mineral colors and other materials.

Being surrounded by antiques and blue-and-white ceramics greatly inspired Koi. She used indigo paste as a painting medium, developing a specific color palette for her artwork. Another key source of inspiration came from observing people. At NY20+, she noticed various individuals at work- maids, chefs, and others. She captured photographs of these workers and created illustrations on natural fiber paper that she had brought from Thailand, blending elements of both Chinese and Thai cultures.
In addition to the paper and indigo, Koi used bamboo twigs as paintbrushes to illustrate the concept of work. She bound a small book with natural fiber paper dyed with indigo and inscribed the word “working” in both Chinese and English. Each page of the book was crafted from natural materials, including lace made from cotton dyed with indigo. Though it is a small book, it holds significant meaning for her and is currently displayed at NY20+.
Looking ahead, Koi plans to create larger-sized illustrations using natural colors that resonate with both herself and her audience.
“Participating in the residency helps me grow and improve my work by introducing me to new worlds, techniques, and learning from our mistakes. This process fosters progress and encourages me to keep moving forward.”
