Exploring the Fluidity of Self in a Changing World
Identity is not static—it shifts, evolves, and is shaped by culture, history, and personal experience. In an era of rapid transformation, from digital revolutions to migration and environmental change, artists play a critical role in interpreting and redefining identity.
Evolving Identities, the theme for Studio 88’s 2025 artist residency, invites artists across disciplines to examine the forces that shape identity—personal, collective, cultural, and beyond. This residency provides a reflective and experimental space for creators to explore identity as a fluid, ever-changing construct, influenced by memory, place, heritage, technology, and socio-political landscapes.
Key Issues & Themes
The theme Evolving Identities is framed around several open-ended areas of inquiry:
🔹 Personal & Collective Identity – How do personal narratives intersect with broader cultural and social identities? What role do tradition, ancestry, and language play in shaping selfhood?
🔹 Migration & Displacement – In an increasingly globalized world, what happens to identity when one moves across borders? How do artists navigate themes of belonging, loss, and hybridity?
🔹 Digital & Virtual Identities – How does the rise of AI, social media, and digital personas reshape notions of self? Where do the lines blur between authenticity and curation?
🔹 Gender & Fluidity – How is identity evolving in the context of gender expression and fluidity? What new stories and forms emerge when traditional definitions are challenged?
🔹 Environmental Identity – As the climate crisis reshapes landscapes and communities, how do we rethink our relationship with nature? Can artists help reimagine a more sustainable and interconnected identity with the planet?
🔹The Artist as Identity – Given the above, how does the role of ‘the Artist’ function in relation to creative practices that are identity forming, and within the broader political realms of representation, documentation, and the evolving ethics of everyday life in the world today

Studio 88’s Evolving Identities residency offers artists an immersive environment fostering deep conversations, cross-cultural exchanges, and creative experimentation. Whether you are a visual artist, writer, performer, filmmaker, or interdisciplinary creator, this residency provides the space, resources, and community to explore identity’s many dimensions.

Application Process
To apply, please complete the online application form and provide the following supporting documents:
• CV
• 100-word biographical note
• 250-word statement outlining why you would like to participate in the programme and the work you propose to develop
• Artist profile and photos of artwork.
Application submission by 31 March 2025 (for residency starting 12 May 2025)
Application submission by 5 May 2025 (for residency starting 9 June 2025)
Residency Fee
There is no application fee. The residency fee will be applied only upon acceptance, based on the residency fee and services listed on our website.
Selection Process
Studio 88 will select the participating artists. Selected artists will be notified via email in early April 2025 and in Mid May 2025.
