Studio 88 Artist Residency welcomes Dr Matt Yoxall, a theatre-maker, storyteller, leadership coach, and published academic with a diverse background in storytelling and community engagement. Trained in theatre in London in the mid-1990s, Matt has worked extensively as a professional storyteller, particularly in museum and art gallery education, as well as community cultural development.

Since 2002, he has been based in Southeast Asia, integrating theatre, storytelling, and development work in consultancy services for local, international, and intergovernmental organizations. His humanitarian focus includes counter-human trafficking, refugee resettlement, and initiatives to combat gender-based violence. Between 2007 and 2010, he collaborated with refugee communities in five camps along the Thai-Myanmar border, later producing touring theatre on safer migration in Myanmar.

Matt earned his doctorate from the National University of Singapore in 2016 and is currently an Honorary Fellow at the Australian National University, leading leadership programs for health professionals in the Pacific. Splitting his time between Chiang Mai and outback Australia, he is now writing a book exploring the intersection of these two worlds.
During his time at Studio 88, Matt will focus on writing Becoming Australian, a book centered on his 10,000km motorcycle journey around the Australian outback. The journey serves as both a personal adventure and a framework to explore the process of identity and belonging. This residency offers Matt the space to step away from his usual role of enabling others and immerse himself in creative exploration. He seeks uninterrupted time to write, research, and refine his narrative—embracing the opportunity to wander, reflect, and play with ideas in a quiet, undistracted environment.
