In November 2024, Michele de la Menardiere, an abstract painter based in San Francisco, California, participated in Studio 88’s residency programme. She shares some highlights of her stay at Studio 88.

Michele de la Menardiere embraced her residency at Studio 88 in Doi Saket, Chiang Mai, Thailand, with creative vigor and a connection to the lush surroundings. Immersed in an environment of serene rice fields and vibrant flora, she created over 25 works of art, ranging from floral studies to abstract pieces. Her daily life balanced art-making with cultural explorations, intuitive painting workshops, and collaborations with local artists. Michele also showcased her work in a small exhibition and engaged with the community through creative outreach.

“Studio 88 provided everything I needed—a spacious open-air studio, a charming bungalow, and a tranquil environment surrounded by extraordinary flora. The residency cat, bike rides, and visits to the local market added simplicity and joy to my days.
During my stay, Aom, the studio director, introduced me to silk makers, fire performers, performing artists, photographers, and local painters like Supachet Bhumakarn, a whimsical, illustrative artist whose shop and studio is located in the center of the old city. I also got to hold a small exhibition.

A highlight of my stay was leading an intuitive painting workshop for residents of a local assisted living center. I challenged myself to develop fun and enriching exercises to allow participants to release judgment and paint with excitement, confidence, and ease.

This residency allowed me to experiment and create with spontaneity while connecting deeply with nature and the local art scene. It was an unforgettable experience that fueled my creativity and brought immense personal growth.”
