Keryn Robinson

Studio 88 is excited to welcome Keryn Robinson, a designer, editor, and visual artist, who will be joining us in October 2024. Discover more about her work here!

Keryn Robinson is a visual artist who lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. She completed a Diploma of Visual Art at Victoria University in July 2013 after working for decades as a graphic designer and proofreader. Her design background has informed her work, especially her sense of colour and use of geometric shapes. Keryn is inspired by nature, the landscape, and street art.

Keryn is primarily a painter exploring colour and abstract expressionism. She is fascinated by the optical and emotional impact of colour and fluorescent paint. Keryn has exhibited in, and curated, several group shows, and had her first solo show in 2018 at Gasworks Gallery, South Melbourne. From 2021 to 2024 she was a resident artist at Blender Studios, Melbourne’s longest running street art and fine art studios and gallery.

During her residency at Studio 88, Keryn plans to immerse herself in the rich artistic and cultural environment of Chiang Mai. Rather than arriving with a predefined project or specific body of work in mind, Keryn embraces a process-based, experimental approach to art-making. She intends to draw inspiration from her immediate surroundings, including a few hundred temples of Chiang Mai, the traditional villages, and the diverse natural landscapes—ranging from tropical jungles and farmland to mountains and forests.

Keryn is particularly eager to connect with the local arts community, learning from and sharing ideas with fellow artists. Her passion for nature will undoubtedly play a significant role in her creative process during her time in Chiang Mai, as she responds to the local flora, fauna, and scenic beauty of the region. While her work will organically evolve throughout the residency, she envisions that the Chiang Mai landscape will inspire new artistic ideas and directions.

Additionally, Keryn is keen to explore the cultural and historical richness of Thailand. She is interested in learning about Thai traditions, arts, crafts, and customs, which she believes will further inform her creative process. Engaging with local artisans and traditional techniques may also serve as a source of inspiration for her abstract and color-focused work.

Ultimately, Keryn’s time at Studio 88 will provide her with a unique opportunity to embrace the vibrant environment, stimulate new artistic insights, and foster creative connections with both the natural world and the local artistic community. Through this residency, she hopes to not only create new artwork but also to seed ideas that will continue to grow beyond her time in Chiang Mai.
