Studio 88 is pleased to introduce Peter Berner, Comedian, Cartoonist, and Acclaimed Visual Artist, who will be joining us at the Relax and Create Garden Retreat, in July-August 2024. Peter Berner, a multi-talented artist, has started his career as a stand-up comedian in 1988. Peter quickly became a household name in Australia. He has written and hosted several popular TV shows such as “BackBerner” and “The Einstein Factor” on ABC TV, “You Could Have Been Watching” on FOXTEL, and “The B Team” on SKY NEWS. Additionally, he has been a prominent voice on the TRIPLE M radio network, hosting both breakfast and afternoon shows. Peter’s stand-up performances have taken him across the globe, including the UK, USA, and various countries in Asia and Europe.
Beyond his comedic talents, Peter is also an accomplished cartoonist, with his work featured in prestigious magazines in Australia and the UK. Currently, he contributes cartoons to Limelight Magazine in Australia and has published two books showcasing his artwork.
Peter’s formal art education began with his graduation from the National Art School in 1995. Since then, he has achieved significant recognition in the art world. Notable accomplishments include being a finalist in the esteemed Archibald Prize (2018, 2021), the Waverley Art Prize (2019), and the Lester Portrait Prize (2022). His works have also been finalists in various other prestigious art competitions, such as the Muswellbrook Art Prize, the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize, and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize.
In his artist statement, Peter emphasizes his dedication to his craft, consistently producing work for over 30 years. He seeks opportunities to disrupt his routine and find new inspiration, particularly through artist residencies. Peter’s goal is to immerse himself in creative environments, recharge, and focus on producing works on paper. He values the agility and playfulness this medium offers, allowing him to continually create and bring back new ideas to further his artistic practice.
With his rich background in both comedy and visual arts, Peter Berner continues to leave an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, always seeking new avenues for inspiration and creation.
