Selected artists-in-residence for Reviving Nature open call

Studio 88 Artist Residency is pleased to announce the selected artists-in-residence for our special open call Reviving Nature: Pollution Alert Artist Residency 2024. Read about what they’ll be working on here!

In June, Studio 88 called for applications from artists from anywhere in the world to shed light on one of the most pressing issues of our time: pollution. Through unique artistic expressions, we seek to raise awareness, provoke dialogue, and inspire meaningful change regarding the detrimental impact of pollution on our planet and its inhabitants. This open call aims to harness the creative force of artists to bring pollution to the forefront of public consciousness and mobilise action towards a sustainable future.

We had so many great applications and we are excited to announce our list of 8 artists selected for the residency.

Diewke van den Heuvel is a mixt media artist from the Netherlands. She works on activism through the lens of a camera. During the residency Diewke will explore air pollution from agricultural fires in Chiangmai through art.

South Korean-born, UK-based interdisciplinary artist Eunmi Mimi Kim explores the nexus between art and technology. During the residency she will investigate the relation between noise data and its impact on humans’ levels of stress and wellbeing.

Spanish designer Irene García works in social and participatory projects and is particularly interested in geometry and colour. For this residency, she will investigate plastic waste and explore the relationship people have with plastic.

Johanna Griffith and Céline Goudreau are a duo of Canadian artists who have worked together for a number of years at a printmaking centre where they both teach. During the residency they will explore the metaphor of the “veil” (of smoke and poor air quality) and its subsequent “unveiling” (by presenting something new).

Brazilian artist and photographer Mariangela Ratto makes bespoke artists books which are handwritten with photographs. For this residency, she is particularly interested in river contamination and the effects of pollution on local communities.

American writer Ruby Peru uses a humorous writing style to heighten and explore life events. During the residency she will work on a book about agricultural pollution that offers an innovative, paradigm-shifting solution.

Sara Wolman is an American graphic artist, branding expert, and naturalist with degrees in both art and political science. In the residency she will merge oil paint and digital illustration to explore the significance of migratory birds and conservation challenges.

We will also welcome Jood Jung, our invited Thai artist during this residency. She is a conceptual abstract Thai artist, based in Chiangmai.  Her project, “Ice Cream of Four Elements”, is an art project inspired by Thai traditional medicine, which invites people to explore the balance of nature within themselves.

Oscar Sidoff Rydelius is a Swedish composer and self-proclaimed “sound explorer”. During the residency he will explore the idea of sound pollution. The project would center around recording sound in Thailand which he indents to combine with some of his previous recordings of nature.
