Testimonial – Natthawut Jaikla

Natthawut Jaikla is a visual artist and sculptor selected to participate in the Studio 88 x NY20+ residency in Chengdu, China. His artistic practice focuses on terracotta, mixed media, and installation art. Through his work, he addresses significant social issues, including human rights, animal rights, climate change, and cultural concerns.

While in Chengdu, Natthawut worked on a project titled “Su Kwan” (Maintain Relationship), inspired by the Northern Thai tradition of tying white strings as a gesture of goodwill. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations, his terracotta installation symbolically weaves together cultural and emotional bonds, connecting past traditions with a shared future. The project emphasizes the Su Kwan ceremony, highlighting the connections among family, friends, and loved ones.

In this ritual, sacred threads tied around the wrists by respected elders symbolize blessings for good fortune, peace of mind, and love. This act strengthens both physical and spiritual bonds.

During his one-month stay in Chengdu, he found the accommodation and work equipment comfortable, although he faced challenges with the summer heat and mosquitoes. Fortunately, he had planned ahead by bringing the necessary materials from home, which saved time and allowed him to focus on his work.

The project staff were kind and helpful, and Chengdu itself was very livable. The food was delicious, transportation was well-organized, and the city was green and clean, filled with friendly people. Most importantly, he appreciated the country’s rich artistic heritage.
