Wuko, a Thai illustrator from Bangkok, has been selected for the Studio 88 x NY20+ Residency Programme in Chengdu. Reflecting on his very first residency abroad, he shared how valuable the experience was in encouraging him to step beyond his comfort zone and discover new perspectives.
This was my first time joining an art residency, and honestly, it was such a fun and valuable experience. Changing my work environment, meeting international artists, and sharing ideas with people from very different styles really opened up my world. It even made me feel like my own work was a bit “yesterday.” Back in Thailand, I usually spend time with painting and illustration friends, so meeting artists from other fields really pushed me to explore new directions.
After returning, I feel my perspective on art has shifted a lot. Now I think more about what I truly want to express, and which direction I want my work to take.
Life at the residency was also wonderful. It wasn’t right in the middle of the city, but everything I needed was there. The staff and local artists were incredibly kind and easygoing, which made me feel very comfortable. I especially enjoyed when they took us to visit temples and historic Chinese architecture — it felt like fun research, and I realized even the way I enjoy traveling has changed since I was younger.
Working in a studio with set hours (8:30 am – 6:00 pm) also helped me build discipline and reset my working rhythm. Overall, it was an amazing experience — and now I’m inspired to keep looking for more residencies abroad!
Wuko is a Thai visual artist whose work weaves together oriental mythology, pop culture, and reflections on belief. After joining the Studio 88 × NY20+ Residency Exchange in Chengdu in July 2025, Wuko have continued his creative journey at Studio 88 in Chiang Mai in October the same year.
