Studio 88 Artist Residency, in partnership with NY20+, is delighted to announce the two Thai artists, Natthawut Jaikla and Wuttinun Kotisathiankul (Wuko) selected for the Studio 88 x NY20+ Artist Residency Programme in Chengdu, China, taking place in July 2025.

Natthawut Jaikla – Visual Artist & Sculptor
Originally from Phayao, Natthawut Jaikla graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. With a practice rooted in terracotta, mixed media, and installation art, his works explore profound social issues such as human rights, cultural transformation, climate change, and collective responsibility. His art is a reflection of personal and societal evolution, driven by a deep appreciation for aesthetics in everyday life.

For the Chengdu residency, Natthawut proposes a project titled ‘Su Kwan (Maintain Relationship)’, inspired by Northern Thailand’s spiritual tradition of tying white strings around the wrists as a gesture of goodwill and connection. Honoring the 50th anniversary of Thai–Chinese diplomatic relations, he will create a terracotta-based installation that symbolically weaves cultural and emotional bonds—linking past traditions with a shared future.

Wuttinun Kotisathiankul (Wuko) – Artist & Illustrator
Wagu is a Thai illustrator from Bangkok whose work merges the spiritual imagination of Eastern mythology with contemporary visual language. Drawing from his upbringing in a Chinese Buddhist household, his art often blends cartoon and manga aesthetics with deeper reflections on belief, identity, and the sacred. His character-driven pieces, such as “Buddhie,” reimagine icons through a playful yet introspective lens.

For his project ‘When Gods Go Local’, Wagu envisions mythical deities from Thai and Chinese traditions living ordinary rural lives. Set against the cultural backdrop of Sichuan, he will create vibrant paintings using traditional Chinese inks and pigments on unconventional surfaces such as local crafts and souvenirs. This project invites viewers to find wonder in the mundane and explores how sacred narratives can be grounded in everyday experiences.
We thank NY20+ for their continued partnership and commitment to supporting meaningful cultural exchange between Thailand and China. Together, we look forward to witnessing the creative journeys of these two exceptional artists unfold in Chengdu.
