Adam Geczy

Studio 88 is excited to welcome Adam Geczy, an artist, writer, and educator, who will be joining us in December 2024. Discover more about his work here!

Adam Geczy is an acclaimed Australian artist, writer, and educator whose career spans over three decades. Currently an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Sydney, his multifaceted practice includes painting, video art, performance, installation, and photomedia. Geczy’s work has been exhibited widely across Australia and Europe, earning recognition for its bold exploration of cultural narratives and its place in major national collections such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Queensland Art Gallery.

Geczy is renowned for his collaborative projects with distinguished artists, including the late Peter Sculthorpe, Indigenous artist Blak Douglas, and sound artist Thomas Gerwin. His artistic output delves into themes of identity, history, and the intersections of art and fashion. Complementing his practice, Geczy has authored over 25 books on art and cultural theory, receiving accolades such as the Choice Award for Best Academic Title in Art.

During his residency at Studio 88, Geczy seeks to immerse himself deeply in the local culture, experiencing Thailand as more than a transient visitor. He plans to gather raw video footage and create a photographic series of evocative black-and-white faux-film stills inspired by an earlier era. The residency will also be an incubator for formulating ideas for a new performance project. Geczy’s approach underscores his belief in residencies as opportunities for thoughtful engagement and creative evolution within unique settings.
