Jonathan Armour, a leading figure in digital and visual arts, returns to Studio 88 for his second residency in August-September 2024. Having previously participated in the “Gender Fluid Evolving Identities” residency earlier this year, Armour now takes part in the Design Lab Performing Arts residency, continuing his exploration at the intersection of technology and art.
Known for merging digital innovation with traditional techniques, Jonathan’s work often explores human identity, challenging societal norms while celebrating diversity. His background in engineering informs his art, driving projects that transform the human form into digital experiences. Jonathan’s work is deeply collaborative, revealing the substance beneath surface appearances and inviting viewers to engage with complex layers of identity and existence.

During his residency, Jonathan will develop three major projects:
- Invocation Workshop: Co-developed with ‘Golf’ Thanupon Yindee, this workshop delves into identity through AR and performance. Participants interact with digital personas, exploring how these interactions differ from real-world engagements, suggesting new forms of communication in our increasingly hybrid lives.
- Human Digital Performance: Inspired by the expressive power of hand gestures in Thai culture, this performance, created with Sade, uses AR and video to blend traditional Thai dance with modern technology. The piece highlights the importance of movement in human interaction.
- Textiles as a Cultural Interface: This project examines textiles as a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds in Thai culture. Drawing inspiration from Buddhist rituals and traditional dress, the performance incorporates fabric and video projections to explore cultural identity and spiritual connections.

Additionally, Jonathan will serve as an international guest artist at the Base Box Theatre, presenting two key events: “Re-Invocation,” a workshop on gender and sexual identity using AR, and “Incarnation,” an experimental performance that explores themes of transformation and identity. Both events highlight Armour’s ongoing evolution as an artist and his commitment to blending digital and physical realms in meaningful ways.
