During their residency, Rachel will focus on developing work that showcases how queer and trans communities transcend the constraints of the gender binary. Through research, creative writing, and discussions with my community, residency participants, and interested locals, they will delve into our individual and collective experiences of gender, with a focus on exploring nonbinary identities in their fluid and evolving forms.
Their project will showcase how LGBTIQ+ communities liberate themselves from cis-heteronormative gender frameworks, and challenge conventional classifications. The materials will be informed by research and concept development but will likely include writing, video, photography, and collage.

On the subject of applying for the Gender-Fluid residency, they write: “I have travelled to Thailand and experienced a rich cultural landscape that accommodates a spectrum of gender expressions. Learning first-hand about gender identities in Thailand will offer valuable insights into how societal, religious, and cultural contexts can influence and shape a more expansive and affirming understanding of gender.
Developing this body of work in Thailand alongside fellow artists exploring gender will elevate the strength and impact of the project, and I’m eager to embrace this invaluable opportunity.”
