Artist duo: Celine Goudreau and Johanna Griffith

Studio 88 is introducing Celine Goudreau and Johanna Griffith, joining us at Reviving Nature: Pollution Alert Artist Residency in February 2024. Learn more about their work and plans for the residency here!

Johanna Griffith and Céline Goudreau are a duo of Canadian artists who have worked together for a number of years at a printmaking centre where they both teach.

Celine Goudreau’s art practice includes painting, printmaking, photography and artist’s books. Her approach is experimental and she likes to combine different techniques. In recent years, she has also incorporated writing into her images. In her work, she explores her own feelings, as well as perceptions of current environmental issues by evoking nature in a poetic way. Themes like the environment, the landscape and geology have always inspired her, as they are imbued with life, movement and fragility.

Johanna Griffith works at the confluence of printmaking, textile art and alternative photography. She has long been interested in ecological art practices as well as the human connection with nature. Raised by a scientist and a science educator, she has a particular interest in combining art and science. Her most recent project “Leaning to the Light” incorporates woodcuts, plant ink and artisanal lanterns, as well as words of hope. She likes to work outside and often works with sunlight, rain water and natural pigments, preferring to let these elements influence her work.

During the residency they will explore the metaphor of the “veil” (of smoke and poor air quality) and its subsequent “unveiling” (by presenting something new). They aim to examine smoke and fire through the lens of science, but also those of poetry and spirituality. Fire can be destructive, but it can also allow for transformation and renewal. Smoke is sometimes used as a purifier, or to send messages to other worlds.
